We are happy and grateful to have London based freelance writer and editor Amelia Phillips part of our Freunde von Freunden team.

Amelia has produced a selection of thoughtful portraits for FvF from the heart of the UK. She introduced us to delicate Persian flavors in chef Soli Zardosht’s home and workplace portrait, a world of illusion and fantasy with set designer Rhea Thierstein, and iconic DJ and BBC radio host, Benji B in a collaborative piece with Sennheiser.

Having studied Journalism at the University of Arts in London and a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Sociology and Film at the University of Nottingham, today the fruits of her labor have been realized as she devotes herself to her freelance writing full-time. Her ability to succinctly tell it like it is has not gone unnoticed. Often centering around music, fashion and contemporary culture her words have been published for publications such as: Dazed & Confused, The Hunger, Canvas8, Vice, Tank, Clash, Protein, The Debrief, Steak Night, Victor and Fused.

We pose our questions to this British lass and get the lowdown on her daily rituals, favorite travel memories and latest projects while discovering the positives and negatives of working remotely as a freelancer.

  • What’s your favorite daily ritual?

Getting up and having a shower. If I don’t have anywhere to be, I quite like watching the double bill of Frasier, too.

  • What’s your most favorite photograph on FvF?

This one of DJ and artist Nomad.

  • Where do you go when you want to relax or get inspired in your city?

I must still think I’m a 14-year-old in the suburbs because I like nothing more than sitting on kerbs or walls in quiet residential areas. At night, the South Bank and banking districts are good to cycle or walk around.

  • Your best travel memory?

Whale-watching and seeing the Perito Moreno glacier in Argentina a few years ago. More recently, I had a lovely trip to the Peak District, stopping off at a pub called The Cat and Fiddle Inn. There was a huge sign lying in a field nearby saying “The Cat and Fiddle Inn. The highest inn in Britain.” I asked why it was on the floor and they said the honor had recently been usurped by The Tan Hill Inn in North Yorkshire. It sounds like there had been a bit of a feud.

  • Your latest artistic discovery?

Lone’s new album, ‘Reality Testing’, is on the money.

  • What current global or local topics are you currently fascinated with?

I’m starting a project on people in pubs, so that. I love the pub, it’s a great leveller. You’ll never find a place like it – so many oddballs in one place talking so much sense.

  • Three websites – more or less – you visit daily?

Fact Magazine,  Viz’s Facebook and Art ReviewLetters of Note is great too, but not updated every day.

  • What’s your favorite interview on FvF and why?

I love this interview with Aldo Paparella. I’d never heard of him before reading this but he sounds great: “One day, when I was strolling through the neighborhood, I looked through a window and saw people painting. As the son of a painter, I was very interested. I entered and noticed that there were students taking a class. I asked what it was about, and soon after I started. It was very funny because everybody was Korean and none of them spoke Spanish, not even my professor. She would only say, ‘Aldo, bad! Bad!’ while hitting me on the back. She was a big Korean woman.”

  • How has technology influenced you?

I’m exposed to more culture, which is good. I spend a lot more time indoors, which is bad. I buy everything online, which is good for me, probably not for the high street. I read too much crap, which is bad. I work all the time, which is good and bad. But I can work from wherever I want, which is brilliant. I’m neither a luddite nor a futurist. I sit on the fence. Aside from the internet, I couldn’t even start on how technology has influenced me. The lightbulbs, the trains… it’s endless!

  • Who would you like to see featured next on FvF?

    The artist Tacita Dean.

Thanks a lot Amelia for the insights, all the great work and people you shared with us.
