When Jordi Huisman contacted FvF with the aspiration to build a base in Amsterdam in 2012, we were extremely impressed by his extensive portfolio and intimate knowledge of FvF’s content and story. Jordi studied Engineering, Design & Innovation before he started his photography studies at the Royal Academy of Visual Arts in The Hague. In 2006, he settled down in Amsterdam with his cat named, Yuki, which translates as “snow” in Japanese.

Since meeting Jordi on Skype together with Thijs van Velzen, he continues to consistently provide FvF with extraordinary guest suggestions and expressive pictures. This is evident in his portraits of the 100-year-old artist, Gisèle d’Ailly van Waterschoot van der Gracht; poet, Lorenzo de Rita; and artist, Itamar Gilboa, shot in his inspiring working environment – just to name a few!

Jordi has worked as a freelance photographer for seven years and continues to prove his multifaceted artistic talent on a a variety of platforms. From 2006 to 2010 Jordi toured Europe and Japan with Amsterdam based hip-hop duo Pete Philly & Perquisite. Other clients include a wide range of magazines such as Stand Quarterly and Blend, cultural organizations, architecture and design agencies and museums.

What’s your favorite daily ritual?
Making coffee in the morning.

What do you do when you are not working with FvF?
Working for one of my clients or on my free work, or procrastinating with on the internet or with films and books.

Where do you go when you want to relax or get inspired in your city?
To get inspired I go to photography museums FOAM or Huis Marseille or exhibitions. To relax, I go to a place nearby that’s called Studio K. It’s a cafe and cinema, and they have great couches and coffee. I also go to watch movies in art house cinema’s like Kriterion, Rialto or The Movies at least once a week.

How has technology influenced you?
It influences the way I photograph. Taking pictures with a DSLR or a large format film camera or two different things for me. It gives different images, and I don’t mean that considering image quality and colors and such. Besides that, I wouldn’t know how to live without internet and mobile phones anymore.

Best travel memory?
Although it was very lonely in a way, three months of traveling through Japan was amazing.

Your latest artistic discovery (musical, art or design)?
The latest album of Damien Jurado, “Maraqopa” gets a lot of plays here.

What was the last great meal you ate & where?
A couple of weeks ago I had dinner in a place called Cafe-Restaurant Amsterdam. Don’t remember much about the main courses, but my girlfriend had sticky toffee cake for dessert which was heaven.

Three websites – more or less – you visit daily?
Nu.nl, flickr.com, volkskrant.nl and Facebook, of course.

Who would you like to see featured next on FvF?
Photographer Iwan Baan.

What makes Amsterdam so special from your perspective?
It’s the place in The Netherlands where the most important museums are, the most art initiatives and design agencies. Next to that it has a nice, open vibe.

Where will your next travels lead you?
I’m thinking of doing a project somewhere in western Africa, but if that doesn’t happen it’ll probably be Iceland in the Summer.
