Job offer: Editorial Internship

With our international editorial team as well as readership growing constantly, we need to expand our Freunde von Freunden team in Berlin and are therefore looking for an editorial intern to support us with the daily business of future publishing in digital and print.

The ideal candidate loves our magazine, is Berlin-based and English speaker (native if possible), familiar with the unwritten laws of the internet, interested in the same cultural content as we are and experienced in writing! We are based in Berlin-Mitte and therefore prefer to work with people we can meet regularly, or who can work from our office.

If you want to help us taking our growing family to the next level, please send us a short note about your skills and experience plus some text sampels to our Editor-in-Chief Sarah (jobs@freundevonfreunden.com). In order to get to know you better, introduce us to your three favorites blogs, music tracks and the most inspiring (online) interview or talk and why in a couple sentences. Please make sure you don’t submit anything exceeding 5MB!

Due to the anticipated volume of applications, we won’t be able to get back on every application.
The internship is paid.

We’re looking forward hearing from you.
FvF Team

Coming up: FvF Istanbul, Amsterdam and Vienna

Guest, editor, photographer, host, translator… – when you think about how many different people work together on a single portrait, it’s incredible to realize that this weeks interview with artist Wendy White from New York was our 100th!

But while we are busy working from our Berlin base, our longtime contributor and close friend Antonia Märzhäuser sat up her temporary residency in Istanbul. She will bring some fresh and exciting interviews straight out of Turkey starting next week with artist Melih Özuysal and his amazing place in Istanbul-Ortaköy. Get ready for some nice pictures by Ege Okal and mystic fairytale housing, colourful painted walls and some insights of the Bosporos metropolis past and future.

Heading west, Jordi Huisman and Thijs van Velzen from our FvF Amsterdam team met the curator of the prestigious FOAM photography museum Colette Olof in her lovely apartment in Amsterdam Oud-West.

The FvF Vienna team with Alexandra von Quadt and photographer Lukas Gansterer hung out with upcoming artist Clemens Wolf in his studio. We are very excited for this very special European city.

We are very happy that the project we started in 2009 literally went beyond our local borders and enabled us to meet many interesting and inspiring people. And there is more international content to come.

2011 in numbers and pictures

What an amazing and great year we leave behind us – the team grew with the challenges and amount of traffic. We received another Lead Award and became international. Along the way we published almost 1000 pictures, more than 30 Interviews, 10 Videos, set up teams in New York City, London, Paris, Sao Paulo and expanded our reach in Berlin. In addition to all the above we produced and published our first book.

Today, after our first working day in this new, exciting year, we dived deep into our numbers and analyzed some of our stats. Hereby we want to give some insight into FvF and also want to thank our readers and supporters. We also want to send a big thank you to our clients and partners who helped make all this possible and enabled us to travel the world. All these journeys and experiences could easily fit into two years. We travelled to New Zealand, from Australia to Indonesia, India, China and the United States, explored Brazil, South Africa and then back to Paris, London and Helsinki.

A lot people asked us „what is our favorite portrait or picture on FvF?“ Well, it‘s almost impossible to make such a call. Perhaps it was meeting photographer legend Michael Halsband who talked about his first time shooting for the Rolling Stones? Or the impressive wardrobe of Luc Besson’s confidante Claire Safronoff in Paris? Maybe it was the lovely details in illustrator Frank Höhnes apartment („Willße mippm Rauchen aufhörn“)?

But who are we to decide – see what our readers liked the most in 2011.

We wish you a happy new year and are looking forward to an exciting 2012!

Thank you everyone so much!

Time flies and this year and the last months have been amazing. We would like to take the festive time as a chance to thank everyone involved in FvF this year.

We want to say thank you to our friends and guests. Also a big thank you to our growing number of readers. They are the ones that make Freunde von Freunden happen. They read what we love and do because it makes us a lot of fun.

2011 was crazy. We received our second lead award in a row in May. We met amazing people in Mumbai, Sao Paulo, Paris, Jakarta, Johannesburg, London, NYC and many more cities and of course in our home town Berlin. We started with the international interviews in September, the book came out in November. We had some lovely events and parties with friends and we travelled a lot for the magazine and clients this year.

So let’s say thank you to our friends in:

New York City: Grace Villamil, Christopher Ambrose, Andrew Mc Mullen, Noemi Staehelin, Vivian Host, Rin Johnson, Waverly Rose Mandel

London: Lilli Heinemann, Jean-Philippe Woodland, Julia Lindquist, Elinor Jones, Brian Ferry (now NYC), Jean-Philippe Woodland, Angelo Carnielo and Sebastian Trojand

Paris: Ilan Rosenblatt, Natalie Weiss, Noémi Causse, Romy Strassenburg, Gesa Hansen, Mascha Kaessner, Sophie Callet

Sao Paulo: Fran Parente, Guto Requena, Julia Albani, Lucio Regner

Berlin: Katrin Weber, Ailine Liefeld, Sarah Weinknecht, Oliver Kann, Torsten Bergler, Antonia Märzhäuser, Fette Sans, Philipp Langenheim, Dan Zoubek, Maxime Ballesteros, Hendrik Thul, Ramon Haindl, Ana Finel-Honigman, Karen und Christian Boros, Uta Grosenick, Matthew Gentile, Ulf German, Thomas Michelbach, Kay Siegert, Maren Sextro, Christian Fussenegger, Torben Höke, Louisa Löwenstein, Rogier Postma, Juliane Spaete, Thomas Andrae, Moritz Kaufmann, Silke Neumann, Nico Niermann, Marcus Werner, Clemens Poloczek, Claudine Braendle, Julia Stelzner, Sylee Gore, Karolin Langfeldt, Charly Wilder

The team continues to grow and there are more cities and countries coming in 2012. We are working hard on the iPad App edition and will release it early 2012. There is also more general news but we will share it when it’s done. But fact is without this amazing team and our great friends this all wouldn’t be possible and the book and website would just be white and blank space.

We also have to thank our supporting clients and a special thank you to our publishing house Distanz and the hard working team behind it.

We are more than happy to have such a wonderful network and are looking forward to everything that’s coming up in 2012.

T H A N K Y O U
and happy holidays!

Eure Freunde

FvF Berlin Book launch at the Reading Room

To sum it up: the Freunde von Freunden Berlin book launch at the wonderful do you read me Reading Room has been a blast! While we were still busy hanging up the poster artworks from Frank Hucky Höhne and Nomad, the gallery space already started to fill up (and it was not even 7 p.m.) An hour later there was not much space to move – more than 400 friends and guests from the magazine came by to check out the book and to see Adriano Sack, who wrote the foreword in it, interviewing Timmi and Frede about the project.

It was great to see so many familiar faces in one room: a lot of close friends and family as well as the whole team and many of our magazine guests like the Haw-Lin boys and almost the whole Hort crew drinking beer with Frank Hucky Höhne, Mario Lombardo in conversation with our very own Torsten, Interview Magazines Jessie, Julia Stelzner and Mahret Kupka, ThirdWaves Igor and Peter, Paul of Brand Brauer Frick, Ines Colmorgen and André Wyst, Esther Perbandt, Jan Mihm and many, many more. Thank you, doyoureadme?! and of course our publisher Distanz for making this happen!

A video with the “making of”of the poster artwork and from the opening is coming soon! We were also thrilled by the demand on the art prints and that is why in the next days we will update you with motifs and how to get them and the regular offset printed posters.

Please enjoy the pics (by the great Philipp Langenheim) and the video by Hendrik Thul:

FvF Goes NYC

With this teaser we want to set the mood for some upcoming New York stories that we will publish here soon. Besides client work, we also interviewed some exceptional diverse people that represent the city in all its multifaceted beauty. We are particularly happy that we were able to set up a permanent New York base with a talented editorial team – FvF NYC is a reality. We hope you will be as excited as we are once you get a glimpse on what’s to come.

In our recent series of interviews we hung out with a true New York original who used to travel the world with the Rolling Stones; drank cortados at a friendly city surfer’s backyard accessorized with old motorcycles & wetsuits; visited a visual artist that led us to Two Bridges, one of the few still unexplored neighborhoods in Manhattan and also enjoyed some quality time including a stunning sunset at a wonderfully talented window-artists’ Brooklyn studio.

So get ready for tons of photos, interviews & videos straight from the Empire State in the coming weeks. Enjoy!
A special thank you goes out to Fette, Gracia, Ailine, Chris, Andrew, Oliver and Hendrik.

Invitation: FvF Book Presentation

We are very happy to invite you to the presentation of our first book and a little get together that we are hosting in cooperation with the Doyoureadme?! Reading Room at Potsdamer Straße this Thursday. You will be able to check out the reason for the constant smiles on our faces- the book and our friend Adriano Sack (who wrote the foreword in it) will casually interview us about the project. We also asked our part-time cover model Nomad and lovely Frank “Hucky” Höhne to work with selected photographs from the book to create poster-sized artworks. We are super curious what they come up with- and suggest you come early to get your hands on these rare beauties… But there will also be a larger amount of classic FvF posters available that we spared from Hucky and Nomad.

We are looking forward to have a cold drink with you while a surprise DJ-friend will take care of the music. See you on Thursday!

Freunde von Freunden Berlin – Our first book

Finally we can deliver the good news that our first book ‘Freunde von Freunden Berlin’ is available in stores across Europe from today (thanks to our distributor die gestalten verlag) and also ready for online purchase. Buy it here. Since the first portraits for the project were produced back in 2009, we always thought about the idea of publishing a book one day. Christian Boros and his publishing house Distanz gave us this opportunity and we couldn’t be happier with the printed outcome.

Making a book that lives up to the expectations of our website was a big challenge, but with the support of such a strong team and a collective effort, it seems to us, almost anything is possible in the future. In our book we introduce a selection of 28 portraits with over 550 pictures, combining exclusive guests such as Peter Raue, Wibke Deertz, Nomad, Karen and Christian Boros, Kaos and Karena Schuessler with some excerpts from current portraits on the magazine such as Sarah Illenberger, Malin Elmlid and Kirsten Hermann. Almost the whole picture selection is new and hasn’t been published before. Although we love all our guests alike, we couldn’t fit all 75 portraits in the book, we hope you understand.

We’re absolutely excited to present this book to all our readers across the world, soon in stores in the UK and USA as well. A big thank you again to all the people involved and all the guests who supported us in the last two years. It has been an absolute blast and we look forward to lots of new challenges coming up in the future. We just came back from productions in London, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Istanbul and New York City and are excited to introduce more cities and countries soon. Currently working on our iPad App.

Please find some more information and an exclusive preview of the book here and you can also officially purchase it on the Distanz webpage.

Two years of ‘Freunde von Freunden’

Can you believe it? Two years online already! This week we celebrate our second birthday with Freunde von Freunden. After a lot of comission-work with our design studio NoMoreSleep, in 2009 we had the dream of an online Magazine that portraits the fascinating people we are constantly meeting in our daily lifes in Berlin. So we gathered a small team and just went for it.

The first one to be interviewed was music-industry-heavyweight-turned-photographer Tim Dobrovolny who talked with us about his favourite music, his way from managing artist to become a photographer himself and his favourite Berlin hangouts.

At the time we met Niki Jagdfeld, he was busy with the opening of his departmentstore Cabinet 206 but still found the time to talk about his family background, his favourite designers and clubbing in Berlin.

Jan-Henrik M. Scheper-Stuke, the „neck-tie-man“ that looks like he is living in a different time than the rest of us, was relatively unknown when we visited him in the manufactory of Edsor Kronen and his private apartment in 2009. He told us about his love for the style of the 20ies, his fashion role models and his favourite restaurants.

Step by step we expanded our circle of friends and we are happy to have the combination of Berlin natives as well as interesting people from all around the world. In the coming weeks we will show you more of the „gems“ of our early works.

„The Neon Obsession continues“

Who would have thought? Sometimes, our portraits lead a secret second life after we publish them. The last interview we did with Silke Neumann is getting really popular all over the internet thanks to the unique D.I.Y neon colour details in her apartment. Check out what other bloggers say about it:

Emmas Blogg: Hot Fluoro
Style Files: Trend: vibrant colors
Inattendu: The neon obsession continues
Riazzoli: A touch of neon
Improvised Life: Paint your shelf edges…pink

What’s New?

Where were we?
After our short yet productive break, we’re very excited to share brand new portraits from around the globe with you. This time we’ve travelled to cities like Paris, London, Sao Paolo and Los Angeles to interview an eclectic mix of genuine good people.
Interviews in September will include architect Joseph Dirand, interior designer Regine Safronoff and knitwear designer Sibling; art collectors Christian and Karen Boros, graphic designers of haw-lin.com and fashion designer Hien Le from Berlin; photographer Fran Parente from Sao Paolo as well as Marc Atlan from LA. Yeah!

International Interviews
Since we’ve expanded beyond our Berlin borders you will notice some evident changes in our portraits. In order to maintain the same local feel and authentic touch as in our previous German conversations, all our international interviews will be presented in the original language (French, Protugese, etc) with an English translation. Our video segments will receive a english subtitle treatment if necessary.

Design Update
Apart from the new content, we’ve also updated the design of the site and are happy to introduce a few new features to the mix. You’ll notice an improvement in the readability of the site including an improved homepage showcasing more news and updates. Overall we’ve tried to keep the changes true to the original style with a cleaner look and easier usability.

FvF International & Update

The team of Freunde von Freunden is proud and super excited to present you an international update of our website including new citys such as Paris, London, Los Angeles and Sao Paulo.
New photo and video interviews will come up in the next few weeks. Among our first guests you will see Joseph Dirand (architect/Paris), Antonio Santin (artist/Berlin) and London based fashion label Sibling. Other exciting guests such as Christian Boros, Francois Mascarello, Haw-lin and Lawrence Watson are still to come.

The last weeks during the summer have been filled with content production not only in Berlin, but also in other citys around the world. Now here comes the international update, finally.
We have always regarded ‘Freunde von Freunden’ as a magazine that is based in Berlin, but founded on a worldwide network of producers working without national boundaries. We hope you enjoy the updated look and content of FvF and look forward to meet you all very soon in all those interesting citys besided our hometown Berlin.
