FvF Mixtape #132: An Autumn Special

We’re certainly feeling the change of season here at FvF, but rather than feel sorry for ourselves, we’ve asked our very own Fabian Dieker to compile a selection of songs that keep him motivated throughout the day.

Along with his colleagues Katharina Grob and Genesis Fulmer he is responsible for hosting and organizing events at our Mitte Apartment and the Kreuzberg-based Friends Space, the 350 square meter physical manifestation of FvF’s online presence.

Originally from Coesfeld in North West Germany, Fabian studied Molecular Biology in Osnabrück, Cologne and Lund, Sweden before ditching his plans to work in a lab and moving to Berlin “without a plan.” He joined the FvF team in March this year and since then has co-organized a whole cross-section of events. “Great fun to host are also our Friends of Movies film screenings at the Friends Space where directors present their work, the next one coming up at the beginning of October,” he says.

“Playing at parties started as a joke and still is one. I have zero professional knowledge about DJ’ing and just pick songs on Spotify!”

“The series Props had a soundtrack that was unheard of in my German universe. It featured ‘90s emo and punk bands like The Get Up Kids, Face to Face, and Texas is the Reason. That music always made me want to and still makes me want to go ride.”

Fabian’s introduction to music came mainly from BMX videos: “Back then watching these tapes and riding my BMX was all I did. The series Props had a soundtrack that was unheard of in my German universe. It featured ‘90s emo and punk bands like The Get Up Kids, Face to Face, and Texas is the Reason. That music always made me want to and still makes me want to go ride.” These days, Fabian’s music taste is much more eclectic; his playlist lurches from ‘70s inspired indie songwriters like Matt Duncan to queen of soul Nina Simone. “I wanted it to be a best-of list inspired by my time in Berlin. But it ended up being 100 tracks long, so I cut it down and it somehow ended up with this quite disruptive song order, of which two were selected by Genesis and Katharina.”

Despite playing at the FvF summer party this year, Fabian remains low-key about his DJ’ing skills: “Playing at parties started as a joke and still is one,” he admits. “At my old job we always listened to someone’s music and more often than not I ended up doing it. But I have zero professional knowledge about DJ’ing and just pick songs on Spotify!”
