Link List #64: A website that lets you send pizza to protesters around America, celebrating David Hockney, and the cost of communal belonging

This week fantasy is at the forefront of our minds in the form of fantastic fiction, we’re questioning how homogenized our design tastes really are, and we’re hungry for democracy and er, pizza. Come take a look at the links we’ve been obsessing over this week here at Freunde von Freunden…

Link up:

    • 1 Hungry for democracy? Pizza to the Polls is a website delivering (you guessed it) piping hot slices to people marching for what they believe in—these guys made deliveries to airports across the states when protests against Trump’s immigration ban occurred. Head online and perform your civic duty here.
    • 2 The biggest retrospective of David Hockney opened at the Tate Modern on February 9, and this article from i-D celebrates its launch with a delightful A-Z on the brilliant artist.
    • 3 We’re big fans of The New Yorker in the FvF office, as much for the in-depth reporting and fiction as for the cartoons. To our excitement, the latest It’s Nice That Bookshelf feature shares The New Yorker’s designers, photo editors, and directors favorite books. Read on and try not to order all of them at once!
    • 4 Hands up if your interior wish list includes a Beni Ourain rug, an oversized concrete planter (for that cheese plant you always forget to water), and a marble-topped coffee table? Our Instagram feeds may be to blame. As Rae Nudson explains in her essay on communal belonging for REAL LIFE: “If online image sharing makes for a community, it also tends to foster what communities have always fostered: conformity.” Read the full version here.
    • 5 Be still our beating hearts at the news of Philip Pullman’s latest trilogy, The Book of Dust! If, like us, you can’t wait until its October 19 release, read much-needed insights in this piece from The Guardian with further suggested listening over on BBC Radio 4 with the author’s latest interview.
    • 6 Kicking off during London Fashion Week, a month-long exhibition takes place at Margaret Howell’s Wigmore Street space. Showcasing the work of feted photographer Alasdair McLellan and his sincere black and white campaigns for the designer since 2004: “’Margaret is great to work with. She has a very distinct vision of the British Isles. We have shot all over, from Devil’s Dyke in the South Downs to Crystal Palace Sports Centre to Brighton Beach and Wensleydale.” Check out some of the selected works here.

Thanks for reading! We hope our links inspire you and give you a small window into what the FvF office is enjoying this week.
