Mickaël Martins Afonso and Caroline Escaffre-Faure Challenge the Urban Status Quo through Design

As part of an architectural and urban planning exhibition, creative duo Mickaël Martins Afonso and Caroline Escaffre-Faure produce a paradigm-challenging installation.

City tours guide guests through the courtyards of hotels, rich in character throughout Montpellier, France, during the Festival des Architectures Vives. In one quiet nook, Mickaël Martins Afonso and Caroline Escaffre-Faure have orchestrated an interactive experience that looks altogether absurd from the outside. The wispy installations, titled “Head in the Clouds” elevate individuals out of the trapped feeling of walking within a city by placing fluffy clouds on their heads. The intent is for people to have a sense of relief within the darkness of the interior, similar to the caps that high strung falcons and horses don to avoid over-stimulation when working. Within these contrasting contexts, the question arises if temporary introspection and isolation is really a remedy or merely a treatment for deeper seated hazards.
