Patrick Bergsma’s Picturesque Microcosms Edge Upon the Dystopian
The Dutch artist creates mini island-worlds for his sentiments

Disarming in ways akin to Wes Anderson’s cinematography, but on a petite scale, Patrick Bergsma models worlds full of vegetation, architecture, topography and individual characters.

As enchanting as the intricate elements might seem, they often come together in a post-apocalyptical manner. The burned down dwellings and encaged tree visuals contrast the seemingly innocent medium, with a distinct binary between humanity and nature. Viewers are guided back a sense of youthful innocence—through memories of grade school plasticine exploration—only to then have that optimism quashed by less pliable concerns like resource depletion and the ravages of war.
