Link List #82: Take one prehistoric swim, a load of Vietnamese soup, a history of privacy, and one million cats—a recipe for procrastination

We’re pretty excited about how eclectic the selection is for our latest Link List. We’ve got a surreal science video, a goldmine of decent book recommendations, and a recipe for a tasty bowl of pho, with some food for thought on the side. And cats! What more does the internet have to offer? Your data. But we’ll get into that a bit later.

    • 1 This video from Aeon invites you to take a slightly eerie but fascinating dip into the ocean with what scientists now reckon is probably the world’s oldest creature. Drift between their membranes, and immerse yourself in the lives of these primordial grubs.
    • 2 Looking for a decent book recommendation to bury your nose into? Whether you’d like to hear about travel writer Paul theroux’s favorite books on foreign exploits, or your interested in thriller writer Lucy Atkins’ top knuckle-whiteners, Five Books have got you cover to covered.
    • 3 Are you sick and tired of your pho being so-so? Well Danh Vo is in the know. His artwork has recently featured in the Guggenheim, New York, and he can make a mean noodle soup—“better than my mother’s,” he tells T Magazine. Don’t just take his word for it. Try it out for yourself.
    • 4 Why do we care so much about privacy? This article from the New Yorker made us sit up and consider what it even means to be a private citizen. Tracing the history of privacy’s unstable definition in the US, the article examines how it’s been invaded—and when it matters.
    • 5 I know where your cat lives. And yours. And yours. This website has located one million images of cats, coordinating them with where they were taken by using publicly available data. Cat’s are great—but a lack of data regulation isn’t. It’s reassuring to see how many have been removed.

We hope you enjoyed our picks for this week’s Link List, but if you’ve still got an internet itch to scratch, we’ve got loads more.
