Link List #107: Art Basel Hong Kong, the making of a refugee, and a fond farewell to the Godmother of French New Wave Cinema

This week we’ve been reading about the highlights of Art Basel Hong Kong and younger fair Art Central Hong Kong, a new editorial series exploring the plight of Afghani refugees in Germany, and the legacy that will be left by the recently late (and legendary) filmmaker Agnès Varda.

  • The recent Mary Queen of Scots film starred Gemma Chan, a British actress of Asian descent, as one of its lead characters. Some dismissed this as historically inaccurate, yet in this article in The Guardian, journalist Steve Rose explains why Chan’s casting is necessary in exposing a systematic imbalance in Hollywood.

  • Hong Kong was a veritable hub of artistic activity last week as it played host to Art Basel Hong Kong, Asia’s premier platform for emerging galleries and artists, as well as the fifth edition of Art Central Hong Kong. ArtAsiaPacific rounds up some of the highlights from both fairs, from gigantic silver zeppelins to hundreds of incandescent light bulbs, half collapsed theater backdrops to peeling street posters.

  • Cinephiles were devastated last week by the news that Agnès Varda, Godmother of French New Wave film movement, died in Paris at the age of ninety. This article in The New Yorker explores her legacy and enduring influence.

  • Photographer Bex Day captures Britain’s older transgender community for her exhibition at London’s Herrick Gallery. Day, whose work often features themes of empowerment, equality, and freedom of choice, is aiming to create a dialogue between older and younger trans people with her intimate portraits. Dazed Digital talks to the photographer and some of her subjects.

  • The Making of a Refugee is a new eight-part series which features portraits of artists, writers, musicians and of Afghani refugees who have started new lives in Germany. Tara N Khan reports from Hamburg for Sri Lankan magazine Himal South Asian.

  • African Business magazine celebrates a big leap forward for female education and independence as the International Finance Corporation agree to fund scholarships for Ethiopian women to attend Gebeya, a pan-African talent hub supplying and training software developers.
