T-shirt controversy, transgender role models, and the youngest tennis player to compete at Wimbledon since 1991

This week we’ve been reading about the transgender musician aiming to change Brazilian attitudes towards the LGBTQI+ community, the controversial t-shirt replicating one worn by journalists in Lebanon during the 1982 Israeli invasion, and the 15-year-old tennis player who defeated Venus Williams in the first round of Wimbledon.

    • Kate Lewis is the Chief Content Editor of Hearst Magazines, the worldwide publishing company responsible for magazines including Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, and Elle.     • Earlier this week, 15-year-old Cori ‘Coco’ Gauff, the youngest tennis player to compete at Wimbledon since 1991, defeated her role model Venus Williams in the first round of the women’s singles.     • Last week saw the fiftieth anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations in Greenwich Village led by members of the LGBTQ+ community. Dazed Digital speaks to five queer icons—including the likes of author Randy Wicker and activist Victoria Cruz—who recount the riots that sparked a social revolution in America.
    • A t-shirt emblazoned “Don’t shoot” in Arabic, French, and English from fashion brand Vetements’ SS20 collection has sparked controversy, The Guardian reports. A semi-replica of a shirt worn by journalists in Lebanon during the 1982 Israeli invasion, the garment has been decried as denigrating Middle Eastern culture and being insensitive towards traumatic historical events.
    • Bubblegum Club speaks to Brazilian transgender artist Urias. After first rising to prominence after an appearance at Sao Paulo Fashion Week, she is now taking on the music industry with the hope of becoming a role model for young transgender girls, especially in her native country which has become notorious for hate crimes against the LGBTQI+ community.
