How a small team of filmmakers captures the human stories behind the European Refugee Crisis

The refugee crisis has shaken up the world for a while now. More than 60 million people have been displaced worldwide since early 2015.

While news coverage mostly focuses on the problem at large, it often forgets about the human being. That’s why one year ago, a small team of filmmakers set out to document the human stories behind the European Refugee Crisis, concentrating on humanity and hope. In collaboration with Magna Carta’s “Refuge Project”, filmmaker Matthew K. Firpo and his team of producers, cinematographers and photographers traveled to the Greek island of Lesbos: “The world was changing and we found ourselves at a crossroads in history, so we set out to help in the way that we knew best—with the telling and sharing of stories.” The result is their touching and beautifully told documentary “Refuge”.
