Jeewi Lee — Studio Visit Berlin - Friends of Friends / Freunde von Freunden (FvF)

Jeewi Lee is an artist based in Berlin, though her relationship to the city goes back further than her own arrival. Her parents, both artists, brought the family here from Korea when Lee was five to study at the Universität der Künste; years later, after they’d returned to Korea, Lee came back on her own terms. That back-and-forth between places never quite resolved into one fixed idea of home — instead, it became the engine of her work.

Lee’s practice moves between conceptual rigor and material research, circling questions of memory, time, and the traces left behind by people, objects, and events. An elephant’s absence, marked only by the smell of its dung. A Tuscan forest, burned to ash and then studied for what grows back. For her upcoming solo exhibition at Berlinische Galerie, marking the GASAG Art Prize, the material is sand: grains gathered from coastlines around the world, examined under a microscope, and enlarged into sculptures several thousand times their size.
